How does uninsured motorist coverage work?

I was in a car accident, and the other driver was at fault. The other driver is not listed on her vehicle's insurance policy, and I've been told by her insurance company that they may deny coverage, because she's a member of the car owner's household. Where does that leave me? I don't have comprehensive coverage on my car. So do I need to sue her for the damage? Or can I file an uninsured motorist claim?
